Richmond...the new Blacksburg?

I am writing this from the career services building on campus in Blacksburg (Virginia Tech). Yesterday evening we had a recruiting social event for my company at Bogen's restaurant. I was a big fan of the free food, but I was much more excited about what was to come afterwards.

At 8:45pm I met up with 12 friends from Homegroup at Macado's, the best restaurant in Bburg. There I was, sitting at a table with some of my closest friends. I almost teared up when I said a prayer before dinner, thanking God for this community of friends. It honestly felt like a glimpse of heaven as I looked around to see these children of God who are head over heals in love with Jesus and with each other. There we were laughing and enjoying each other's company, and I am confident that God had a smile on his face.

Afterwards I went to my buddies Josh, Gary & Joel's place for some no-messin'-around foosball. I was a little nervous as these guys have been playing like woah and I haven't been around a foosball table much since moving to Richmond. But it worked out well; I ended up 5 and 1. I'll take that ;-)

About the title of this blog entry... I'm realizing it's not that it's the town of Blacksburg that makes this place so perfect, it's more of the community I have found here. So many times I find myself longing to be back here and relive everything about VT, but I don't think that's the best move. I'm giving it time, but I am looking forward to finding in Richmond what I have come to love here in Blacksburg. It'll happen, because I think that's how God designed us, to live in community with others. Richmond will some day become the new Blacksburg, straight up.

Yeah, that's cool... don't mention the fact that some pretty cool dude helped you win those 5 games, and the second I leave is the game you lose. I don't believe in coincidence, and neither does God.

Hehe, it was awesome to see you, man. Just what our little group of friends needed. The presence of Ian Mofo Davis.

Dude, that's awesome being back, I totally resonate. Every person in the homegroup is like family. It reminds me of when Jesus said, "Wherever two or three of you are gatherd in my name, there I am amongst you." The Celtics used to call times like that in Macados "thin places", places that seem more like Heaven than they do like Earth.

And if God is God, and if Jesus truly is wherever we gather in love of him and each other, then we'll find those same thin places here in Richmond - I'm sure of it.

Yikes.

I missed you Ian. My bad. No really, I wish I was there to see your style/face/hear your stories.

But let truth be truth...and you were fo' real in this blog. Like steady state I worry about community emptiness outside of something like B'burg. Something resembling (I guess) a "thin" place like Snook mentioned in an earlier post. But then you come in (and some other close dudes) who stand in the wake of struggle...and pursue God (community in this case) where it ain't easy. No joke. That is sweet man. Such a great example. Or in gangsta tone (which I am beginning to fall in love with) "sucka got game and he ain't 'fraid ta show it". God is so great to let me know your story and others. Thanks. Yeea Buddy.

Whoa, a few more words of gold from Snook, but that's totally what it feels like. Thin places are sweet! That's pretty much HG in a nutshell, including getting together separately with people from HG, such as you, Nate, Snook... That's exactly it. And you guys WILL find those places.

Interestingly, it's where you are when you gather in His name. Right there. It's not like you have to look for it. Gather with someone. Bam, instant thin place.
