It's Just a Truck

About two months ago I visited Laura at her parents' place in the Shenandoah Valley. Her grandparents live within walking distance. On the way back from a walk to the bridge, Laura's grandfather drove by and stopped to say hi. I said to him, "nice truck!" His reply changed my perspective: "it's just a truck."

It's just a truck. Do I ever say that regarding any of my possessions? It's just a car. It's just a laptop. It's just a ... everything I have. I worry too much about material stuff. One day, hopefully not soon, the things I have I will have no more.

If you ever need a good kick in the face, go to the Dominican Republic, or another place with a significant poor population. Look at the smiles on the faces of children who have so little. If you are lucky, you can spot them dancing in the streets, or singing songs together with friends.

A cool verse: "give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread" (Prov. 30:8). What a bold prayer. Do I have the guts to pray that? If so, then a lot of things I have or want goes out the door. Can I give up those things?

Nice thought dude, we get so enamored (sp?) by our possessions in this country that we forget what's important. So much stuff and we're still the most depressed nation in history. So rich and we still have as much poverty here as ever. It would seem to me that this whole having possessions goal isn't working out for people. Maybe I'll pick another goal for my life...

For real, man. After LT, I'm seeing the things I have and realizing I really need none of it. Well, not none of it, but a significant portion less. Hehe, Harms read about Hudson Taylor, a missionary to China, and he had nothing, basically, but was blessed with what he needed when he needed it. Also another guy in China who came to believe and was imprisoned and beaten many times for his faith. All the guy wanted was a Bible. He eventually received a dream that depicted two men coming up to him with a Bible in a bag (and in prison, it's hard to get stuff unless you know a guy), and two guys showed up at his cell one day, he recognized them from his dream and told them, "You have my Bible!" and of course they did. It's not about possessions, until you have none. And then you would enjoy possessing some bread and water for once. Or a Bible.
